Tamales at Mike’s, 5:30 p.m. Sunday

Let’s do our part for the hurricane victims by going Tex-Mex. Tamales will be a couple hours’ work, but I doubt they will disintegrate. Really, I do.
We need:

salsa
guacamole (opt)
sour cream (opt)
1 lb tofu, crumbled
2 teaspoon Chinese 5 spice powder (or some combination of spices that
sounds like it would work)
3 tablespoon onion, dried (or 5 tbsp. fresh)
1/4 cup bell pepper, chopped
4 teaspoon mustard, prepared – Mike
20 corn husks – Mike
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper – Mike
1 tablespoon soy sauce – Mike
Tamale Dough (Masa):
4 cups masa mix for tamales (probably from Freddie’s or Safeway)
1 tablespoon baking powder – Mike
2 teaspoons salt – Mike
4 cups vegetable broth, warmed – Mike
1 cup vegetable shortening – Mike
We also need a steamer. Dan, do you think you could borrow one from atop your fridge?

I can bring the bell pepper at least. Let me check back in in an hour to see if I can bring anything else.

We can bring:
- small onion
- 1 pound tofu
- spices
- sour cream alternative (still dairy, see below)
- salsa
I’ve been using plain yogurt as a sour cream substitute – the flavor is close, but not the same, but it’s a lot healthier than sour cream. It’s not vegetarian, though. I’ll be glad to bring that.
I’ll let wikipedia guide me on the spices.
I think that just leaves guacamole, a vegan sour cream option and masa.

I’ll bring the bell pepper, the guacamole and the masa mix for tamales. Dan, I wasn’t sure if you would want to bring the vegan sour cream from last time (if you still have it); otherwise, I can get some of that as well.
