Picnic at Sauvie Island
by danom on Jul.11, 2009, under Uncategorized
We’ll be having a picnic at Sauvie Island for SNDC either on Sunday, July 12 or on Sunday, July 19. Here is the plan.
- Those of you who want to carpool with me can meet me at my place at 5:30 pm. The rest of us will meet at the parking lot of the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area (cost to park is $3.50 per car, I believe).
- I don’t have time to pick berries, but if some of you want to head up there earlier and do that, we can just meet together at 6:00.
- I’ll make the Purple Potato, Sugar Snap Pea, and Mint Salad.
- I’ll also bring utensils and plates.
Others could bring:
- Bread and sandwich fixings.
- Fresh fruit.
- Water (and maybe juice). Note: Someone needs to bring water (and cups), because there isn’t any available on site.
The entrance to the wildlife area is at Sauvie Island Wildlife Area, 18330 NW Sauvie Island Road, Portland, OR 97231. The directions are:
Take Hwy. 30 to the Sauvie Island Bridge. After crossing the bridge, stay on NW Sauvie Island Road for about two miles. Stay left at the “Y” intersection. The wildlife area headquarters is on the right about 1/4 mile past the “Y” intersection.
Please leave a comment to let us know what you can bring.

I can bring fresh fruit, water and cups.
Here’s a question, though: why either this Sunday or next? Can some people not make it this week?

We’ve been discussing some via email. Both Dan and I have some things going on that would make the picnic easier for us next week.

I’ll bring bread and juice. Whole wheat OK, or do people have another preference? Any juice preferences?
Dan, how many seats do you have in your car? I invited 1-3 people along (my sister, possibly her boyfriend, and Helen Funston), so it’s possible we might need another car if everyone’s meeting at 5:30. But I’m OK with following you, or making my own way…

Dan, I just got your last email about still postponing (it showed up in my Spam account for some reason). It might be a bit awkward (for me, that is) after inviting people, but if most people would rather meet next weekend, I’d be OK with that. Maybe we could do two picnics, so no one misses out?
My Internet access is a little spotty these days, so I’ll give someone a call or drop by at 5:30 just to double-check…

Hi everyone,
I think I am going to be too stressed out about my take home work if I attend today. Maybe you all could go and I could host at my place next week.

I just threw a big wrench in this process by sending an email before seeing this post.
Here’s my attempt to resolve it: there should be an SNDC-in-exile picnic at Sauvie Island this weekend, featuring Courtney and the Ellery squad, followed by an SNDC-with-Dan-and-Brian picnic next weekend at Sauvie Island or elsewhere, possibly including berries.
My commitment tonight isn’t until 9 p.m., so I can go to a 5:30-8:30 picnic. And if that’s the plan, I can bring salad, cheese, lettuce, onion, pickles, mustard and tomato.
I for one see nothing wrong with two picnics in a row.

It sounds from the emails that Mike is out, too, so I’ll throw in the towel. Next week at Dan’s place works for me.

Wait! Now I retract MY wrench. Just talked with Mike, and the new plan is to meet today, directly at Sauvie Island, at 5:30. (If anyone needs a ride, I think you can just call Mike or myself, and we can make that happen.) Everyone can bring what they promised to bring, and I’ll also bring fake meat and/or avocado for the sandwiches. We’ll meet in the parking lot area. Hopefully this’ll work.

As the day goes by, I will stand by my prediction that I am not going to get shit done in time to participate today. Have fun, those who can make it!

Sorry folks, all the “will it happen, won’t it happen” stuff confused me, and I started making other plans, and now I don’t think I’ll be there tonight. BUT! Next week I’ll be twice as present.

Alright everyone, sorry for putting into motion the confusion! For those of you who go out tonight, have fun. Let’s regroup this week and figure out our plans for next weekend.
