SNDC is Not a Dinner Club

Berry Pickin’ Time!

by Lena on Jul.31, 2010, under Uncategorized

Let’s go pick some berries, friends!

We could go to Sauvie Island…but I propose we go to Gresham/Damascus instead.  Sauvie Island is always so crowded and filled with yuppies…I can’t make promises, but I suspect that Gresham will be less crowded and less yuppified…plus, we don’t get out that way very often.  A friend I know has been to Thompson U-Pick before, located here.  We could arrange carpools if people would like, bring a picnic lunch…

So, uh, my schedule’s a little crazy the next few weekends…I propose the following dates, in preferential order:

  1. Sunday, August 8th, 1pm (I have a morning engagement)
  2. Sunday, August 29th, at our normal time, or earlier!
  3. (Saturday, August 14th), anytime*

*The 14th is contingent upon whether our out of town guests, Kate and Erik (Grinnell ’00) will want to go that day…if they do, that would be my first choice!  We’ll have to call and see what’s ripe that weekend, but I like being open to adventure.  Besides, whatever it is will be damn good, that’s for sure!

Thoughts?  What days sound best for everyone? Cast your vote and I’ll tally up.  Also, if you have a strong reason for going to Sauvie Island instead, let me know!

    This is great.

I like the idea of keeping this on Sunday, so my vote is to move next week’s SNDC back to 1 p.m.

  2. danom

August 8 or August 29 would work best for me.

  3. Lena

Hmmm…well that’s two votes for Sunday…I’m still waiting to hear from a few more folks, but if I don’t hear anything soon, then let’s plan to go this Sunday at 1pm.

  4. Ellery

Sunday at 1 sounds good to me!

  5. Courtney

I’d love to do it this Sunday, and I can drive a few folks in my car if needed. I’ll be out of town the weekend of the 14th & 15th.

    Alright, this Sunday it is!

I have an engagement until noon, so I see a few options:

    1. Someone can host a quick sandwich bar at their place starting at noon with the goal of leaving for Thompson Farms at 1pm, and I’ll just meet everyone at the host’s house to help drive.

    Or…

    2. We can plan to bring picnic fixings to the farm and eat there (I’ll need to call and make sure that’s okay, but I don’t think it should be a problem). That would be a later lunch, though.

What do people want to do?

Either way’s fine with me. I do like the picnic idea. If we want to do the sandwich bar, I’m almost positive I could host at my house, and probably help drive too.

  8. Courtney

I don’t think I can host at my place, but I have a bunch of veggies I’d love to share: carrots and tomatoes a cucumber for sandwiches, carrots for munching. I also have red cabbage and yellow summer squash if anybody has any use for either of those.

So, I was invited to a party on Sunday afternoon by some friends I haven’t seen in ages. I think I will have to skip this week, unfortunately, so that I can go see them.

Since Sunday parkways is in my neighborhood on August 15, I’d like to host that weekend. We could all meet at my place and then walk half a block to Sunnyside Park, where I believe Lena said she plans to have a booth. Sound good?

That idea on the 15th sounds cool to me, Dan.

Actually, I think I’m leaning more toward the picnic idea for the 8th (although I think I can still host if it turns out to be a problem to picnic at Thompson).

I can still bring some sandwich fixings–bread, mayo, pickles, cheddar cheese. I can also probably drive if people need…

  11. Ellery

Wait, sorry! I might have been jumping ahead too fast. If the 29th works for people too, I’m OK with waiting on berry-picking until then, so we don’t leave Dan out…

  12. danom

Actually, I don’t really care if I go berry-picking or not, so feel free to do it this weekend anyway.

    Cheers,
    Dan

Because I am a flake, I totally forgot that my own freaking board meeting was this Sunday… at 1. So Brian and I can’t go berry-picking at 1.

But… Brian, El, Roy and I, at least, could pick berries at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. That’s day after tomorrow. If it’s no skin off anybody’s back, we could do that instead. Or Courtney, Lena, El, Roy and probably Electra could have a great time Sunday, I’m sure.

  14. Courtney

I can berry pick Saturday, but I won’t have a car so I’ll have to bum a ride from somebody.

  15. danom

Saturday would work for me. I will be recovering from LASIK but should be up for going out.

    Dan

  16. Ellery

Courtney, you’ll be at your house, right? I think I can pick you up. I could swing by around 12:30-1.

Roy (and Electra?), need a ride too? Just let me know: 503-935-6057.

I’ll still bring sandwich fixings, unless anyone objects (bread, mayo, pickles, cheddar cheese; ham?).

  17. danom

So we are on for Saturday for sure, then?

  18. BKS

Sorry everyone, I know part of this last minute rescheduling is on my behalf, but Lena and I very likely can’t come along tomorrow. We are making good progress on the front door refinishing project after my 12 hour “vacation” day efforts today, but still have quite a ways to go. We obviously want to be able to put the door back up by Monday, so unless we have a spectacularly productive morning tomorrow we’ll still be here inhaling paint stripper fumes tomorrow afternoon.

Lena also wonders if anyone has called the picking place to make sure they have good things available to pick…

  19. Mike

What if we all just met at Courtney’s at 1:30? She’s centrally located and we could try to work out carpools (not to mention destinations) from there. Dan, will the surgery allow you to drive?

  20. danom

Yes, actually, I am able to drive today (yay!). I need to put in eye drops every 30 min. and wear sunglasses, but I should be able to make it.

I’ll see you all at Courtney’s house at 1:30.

  21. Courtney

Sounds good to me. See you all here.
